THE PUNCH LIST / SEO

How long does SEO take to work?

The straight answer

For a local service business: technical fixes and Business Profile changes show within days to weeks; new service and city pages start ranking for the less competitive searches in one to three months; the competitive head terms and a stable map-pack position in the towns you want take six to twelve months of steady work, because they depend on reviews, listings and mentions that accumulate. The first calls from SEO usually arrive in the first quarter, and the work is judged over a year. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is describing a search nobody makes.

The Punch List / What to do, in order

  1. Take a baseline before anything changes: positions for your twenty real searches from Search Console, the map-pack grid, the calls and forms from the site last month.
  2. Month one: fix what is broken — indexing, speed, titles, the profile’s category and services, the listings that disagree. These move fast.
  3. Months one to three: publish the page per service and per city, each a real answer. Expect the long, specific searches to start appearing first.
  4. Every month, without a break: reviews arriving, photos and posts on the profile, one new or improved page. Consistency is the mechanism.
  5. Watch impressions before clicks: Search Console showing the site to more searches is the first sign, weeks before anyone clicks.
  6. Run Google Ads alongside if you need calls now; it buys the time SEO needs and tells you which searches convert.
  7. Judge at three months for direction and twelve for results. Stopping at month four is the most expensive decision in local SEO.

Why it takes as long as it does

SEO is slow for a structural reason, not a technical one. Google is trying to rank the business that is the best, most trusted answer for a search, and trust is built from things that accumulate: reviews arriving over months, listings that have agreed for years, mentions on other sites, pages that have earned clicks. A new page can be crawled tomorrow; it cannot have a year of history tomorrow. The competitors already in the map pack have that history, and you are being compared to them.

That is also why it lasts. A position earned this way does not vanish when you stop paying, the way an ad does. Which is the trade: slower to build, but yours.

The timeline, for a typical local business

Days to two weeks — the technical fixes
A noindex removed, a sitemap submitted, a page speed problem fixed, a wrong primary category corrected on the Business Profile, a duplicate listing merged. Google reacts to these quickly, and if a site was actively broken, this is where the first visible change comes from.
Weeks two to eight — the pages start to be seen
New service and city pages are indexed and begin appearing for the long, specific searches: “tankless water heater installation Spring Hill” before “plumber Spring Hill.” Search Console impressions rise well before clicks do. This is the stage owners mistake for “nothing happening.”
Months two to four — the first calls
The specific searches produce the first tracked calls and forms. The map pack starts to show the business near its own address for its main category. Reviews and profile activity from the routine begin to count.
Months four to eight — the middle
Positions for the head terms climb from page three to page one and bounce around there. Map-pack coverage spreads outward from the address as prominence builds. Calls become a steady monthly number rather than an event.
Months eight to twelve and beyond — the compounding
Stable page-one positions for the searches that matter, a stable pack position in the nearby towns, and a cost per call from SEO that keeps falling while the ads’ stays flat. This is the year the work was for.

Every business starts from a different place. A business with a good site, a strong profile and two hundred reviews that just needs city pages will move in weeks. One starting from a page-builder site, an unclaimed profile and no reviews is starting from zero, and the timeline above is about right.

What speeds it up, and what does not

Speeds it up: a fast, well-built site from the start; a complete profile with the right category; a review routine that produces several a month from day one; pages that actually answer the searches rather than gesture at them; and being in a market where the competitors have been coasting.

Does not: publishing forty thin pages instead of ten good ones; buying links; changing the site every week so Google never sees a stable version; and switching agencies at month four, which resets the clock on everything but the calendar.

Buys time: Google Ads run alongside. They produce calls this week, they tell you which searches actually convert so the SEO targets the right ones, and they carry the business through the months the organic work needs. The two are not alternatives; the ads are the bridge.

How to tell it is working before the calls arrive

  • Impressions in Search Console rising — Google is showing the site for more searches. This comes first, and it is the sign the work is being read.
  • The long searches appearing — specific phrases with the town in them, at positions that were nowhere before.
  • Average position falling across the tracked set, even while it is still on page two.
  • The map-pack grid filling in from the address outward, month over month.
  • Branded searches rising, because the reviews and the profile activity are making the business known.

These are the numbers a monthly report should show alongside the calls, because for the first quarter they are the only evidence there is. A report that shows only rankings for five vanity phrases hides all of it.

When to worry

At three months, if impressions have not moved at all, something is wrong: the pages are not indexed, the profile is suspended, the site is blocking crawlers, or the work is not being done. At six months with rising impressions but no calls, the pages rank for the wrong searches or the site does not convert — a different problem with a different fix. At twelve months with no page-one positions for any real search in the home town, the plan was wrong for the market and the agency owes you an explanation, not another month.

FAQ / Answers

Questions people also ask

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Technical fixes and Business Profile changes show within days to weeks; new service and city pages start ranking for specific searches in one to three months; competitive head terms and a stable map-pack position take six to twelve months. The first calls from SEO usually arrive in the first quarter, and the work is judged over a year.

Why is SEO so slow?

Because Google ranks the most trusted answer, and trust is built from things that accumulate — reviews, consistent listings, mentions, pages that have earned clicks — and the competitors already ranking have a head start of years. A page can be indexed tomorrow; a history cannot be built tomorrow. The same reason makes an earned position last.

Can SEO results be guaranteed?

No. Google sells no position, and no agency controls it. What can be promised is the work, the schedule, the measurement and honest reporting of the early signs — impressions, specific searches appearing, the map grid filling in — before the calls come.

Should I run Google Ads while waiting for SEO?

Usually, yes. Ads produce calls this week, show which searches actually convert so the SEO targets the right ones, and carry the business through the months the organic work needs. As the organic positions arrive, the ads budget can be reduced or moved to the searches SEO does not yet win.
