GUIDE / THE DEFINITION
What is AI SEO?
The straight answer
AI SEO is search optimization for the engines that now answer questions instead of listing links — Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. It keeps everything classic local SEO does and adds three disciplines on top: AIO, making the business legible to machines; AEO, being the answer that gets selected; and GEO, being cited inside the answers the engines write.
Key takeaways
- The results page changed: for a growing share of questions the customer reads one answer and never sees a list of ten links.
- An engine that recommends one business is choosing an entity it understands and other sources agree about — not the page with the most keywords.
- AI SEO is four disciplines run as one program: SEO, AIO, AEO and GEO. The first is the foundation; the other three are new.
- It is measured by asking the engines the questions your customers ask and recording whether you are named and cited — not by a ranking chart.
- Most of the work is unglamorous: one consistent identity everywhere, pages that answer, structured data, reviews and listings that corroborate.
What changed in search
For twenty years a search produced a list, and the job was to be near the top of it. Now a search often produces an answer. Google shows an AI Overview above the results for many questions and offers AI Mode, a full conversational search. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot answer the same questions directly, with a handful of citations underneath. A homeowner who asks any of them for a roofer in Franklin gets a name or two, a sentence about each, and links to the sources the engine trusted.
Three consequences follow. The answer is on the results page, so a growing share of searches end without a click. The engine names one or two businesses, not ten, so the competition is for the recommendation rather than for a position. And the engine decides whom to name by reading everything it can find about the business — the website, the Google Business Profile, the directories, the reviews — and checking that the record agrees with itself.
What AI SEO is made of
AI SEO is not a replacement for local SEO. It is local SEO with three disciplines added, and the four are listed here in the order they depend on each other:
- SEO — Search engine optimization
- Search engine optimization (SEO) is the work of earning a position in Google’s organic results and local map pack for the searches a business wants — through technical health, content built around real search demand, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent citations and reviews.
- AIO — AI optimization
- AI optimization (AIO) is the work of making a business legible to AI systems — one consistent entity with the same name, services, area and facts on every page and profile, expressed in structured data and plain-text files a model can parse without guessing.
- AEO — Answer engine optimization
- Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting a page selected as the answer to a question — in Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants and chat interfaces — by opening with a direct, self-contained answer, using question-shaped headings and marking FAQs up with FAQPage schema.
- GEO — Generative engine optimization
- Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting a business cited and recommended inside the answers generative engines write — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode — by publishing citation-worthy specifics, being corroborated by independent sources, and keeping the entity consistent and current.
Each one stands on the one before it. A business that has never done the first — a fast site, a complete profile, consistent listings — has nothing for the last to cite. The full definitions, with the related terms, are in the glossary.
What the engines actually read
When an engine builds an answer about a local business it draws on a small set of sources, and the same set comes up in every check we run:
- Your website — the service pages, the city pages, the about page, the FAQs. Whether it can be fetched by the engine’s crawler at all, and whether the important text is in the HTML rather than painted in by a script.
- Your Google Business Profile — category, services, hours, photos, reviews, the address or service area. For Google’s own answers this is the record it trusts first.
- Directories and review sites — the listings that repeat your name, address, phone and category. Agreement between them is a trust signal; disagreement is a reason to name someone else.
- Reviews — the count, the pace, the rating, whether you reply, and what the reviews say you do and where.
- Third-party pages that mention you — local press, associations, suppliers, sponsorships, the trade sites that list you.
- Structured data — the Schema.org markup that states all of the above in a form a machine reads without guessing.
The thread through all six is consistency. An engine that finds three versions of your name, two phone numbers and a category that does not match what your pages say has three candidates and trusts none of them.
AI SEO versus traditional SEO
The old work is not wrong; it is incomplete. Here is the like-for-like difference:
- What it optimizes for. A keyword and a position, versus a question and its answer — on Google and inside every AI engine.
- How the business is described. Whatever each page happens to say, versus one entity described identically everywhere, in structured data a machine can verify.
- The content. Blog posts by the pound written for a crawler, versus answer-first pages with specifics an engine can quote, and FAQs it can lift whole.
- Authority. Links counted, versus corroboration — independent sources that say the same thing about you.
- Measurement. A monthly ranking chart, versus the rate at which each engine names and cites you, next to the calls and forms the site produced.
What to do first
The order matters, because each step is what the next one is built on.
- Baseline what the engines say now. Ask Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot the questions your customers ask — by trade, by city, by problem — and write down who is named, who is cited and who is missing. The free AI answer check does the Google part in twenty seconds.
- Fix the entity. One name, one description, one list of services and one service area, repeated exactly on your site, your Business Profile and every directory that matters.
- Structure every page for machines. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema; an llms.txt file; clean HTML; crawl access for the AI agents.
- Write answer-first. Each page opens with a direct, self-contained answer under a question-shaped heading, then earns it with specifics: process, timelines, warranty, service area.
- Get corroborated. Reviews, citations, directory profiles and third-party pages that repeat the same facts your site states.
- Measure, monthly. The same questions, asked again, with the answers recorded against the calls and forms the site produced.
That sequence is the AI SEO program as we run it. The process page shows where it sits in a build.
Who needs it
Any business whose customers might ask an assistant instead of typing a search — which now includes most home services. The test takes a minute: ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Mode for the best business of your kind in your city. If it names you, and describes you accurately, your record is in good shape. If it names three competitors and not you, the reasons are almost always findable in the six sources above, and fixable.
The advantage a local business has is that the engines are trying to answer a local question with a local recommendation. They want a specific, verifiable, well-corroborated business in that town. A national brand cannot be that; you can.
How you know it is working
Not by a score. By the same questions, asked of the same engines, every month, with three things recorded: whether you were named, whether your site was cited, and which competitors appeared instead. Beside that, the calls and forms the site produced, and the visits your own traffic dashboard attributes to AI assistants — every site we build counts those as their own channel.
When the named rate rises and the calls rise with it, the work is working. When one moves without the other, the report says which, and the next month’s work is chosen from that.

FAQ / Answers
What is AI SEO? — questions
Is AI SEO different from SEO?
It includes SEO and adds to it. Classic SEO earns positions in Google’s organic results and map pack. AI SEO keeps all of that and adds AIO (being legible to machines), AEO (being the answer that gets selected) and GEO (being cited inside generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Mode). A business cannot do the second half without the first.
Can you guarantee my business will appear in AI answers?
No, and no honest agency can. No engine sells placement in its answers, and each one decides differently. What can be done is to make the business the clearest, most consistent, most corroborated candidate for the question, and to measure every month whether the engines are choosing it.
Does AI SEO replace my Google Business Profile work?
No — it depends on it. The Business Profile is the record Google’s AI answers trust first, and it is one of the sources the other engines read. Optimizing it is part of the program, not something the program replaces.
How long does AI SEO take to show results?
The entity and structure work is done in the first weeks; the engines re-read a site on their own schedules, so changes typically show in their answers over the following months rather than days. The baseline taken before the work starts is what the monthly checks are measured against.
What does AIO, AEO and GEO stand for?
AIO is AI optimization: making the business legible to AI systems as one consistent entity. AEO is answer engine optimization: being the answer that gets selected in AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice and chat. GEO is generative engine optimization: being cited and recommended inside the answers generative engines write. All three are defined in full in the glossary.
