GUIDE / GOOGLE AI

How a local business shows up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

By Michael Blair, founder, Nashville’s Web Design · Updated

The straight answer

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode build their answers from the same signals as the map pack and the organic results — the Business Profile, reviews, your pages and the sources that corroborate them — and cite the pages they drew from. Google has said there is no special markup or requirement beyond being indexable and following its ordinary guidance. What decides whether you are named is the work of being the clearest, most consistent, most corroborated answer to the question.

Key takeaways

  • AI Overviews are the summary above some results; AI Mode is a full conversational search. Both cite sources and both read the Business Profile for local questions.
  • Google’s published guidance is that no special markup is required: being indexable, helpful and structured is the requirement.
  • The local signals are the ones you already know — a complete profile, reviews, real service and city pages, consistent listings, schema — read together.
  • Search Console does not report AI Overview traffic separately, so you measure by asking: does the answer name you, and does the site’s own traffic show AI referrals rising.
  • The free AI answer check asks AI Mode your question live and shows who it named and what it cited.

AI Overviews versus AI Mode

An AI Overview is the generated summary Google places above the ordinary results for some searches, with links to the pages it drew on. Google rolled them out across the United States in May 2024. AI Mode is a separate tab and a full conversational search: it breaks a question into several searches, reads across them, writes a longer answer, keeps the thread going, and for local questions shows businesses with their ratings and a map. Google brought it to everyone in the United States in 2025.

They share the machinery underneath — Google’s index, its Knowledge Graph, Maps and Business Profile data — and they share the behavior that matters to you: they cite what they used, and for a local question they lean on the Business Profile and the reviews first.

When they appear for local searches

Not for everything. A plain “plumber near me” still tends to produce the map pack and the results. Questions produce the AI features: “what does a tankless water heater cost to install in Franklin,” “how do I choose a roofer after hail damage,” “best-reviewed electricians in Brentwood for a panel upgrade.” Comparison, how-much, how-long and which-one questions are where an Overview appears, and AI Mode answers all of them at length.

That is the shift in plain terms: the customer who used to type the trade and scan the pack now asks the question and reads the answer. The businesses in the answer take the call.

What Google says helps

Google’s own guidance on AI features is short: there is nothing special to add. Pages need to be indexable, the content needs to be helpful and to satisfy the ordinary search guidance, and structured data helps Google understand what a page is about. Google has also said that the AI features are meant to send traffic to a wider range of sources, and that being cited is a matter of being a good source for the question.

Read that as: the AI answer is downstream of everything you were already supposed to do, done well enough to be quoted.

The local signals it reads

  • The Business Profile. The primary category, the services, hours, photos, the service area or address, and the reviews — their count, pace, rating and your replies. This is the record Google’s AI trusts first for a local business.
  • Your pages. A page per service that answers the question its heading asks, a real page per city, an about page that says who you are. Answer-first, with specifics.
  • Consistency. The same name, address, phone and services on the site, the profile and the directories. Google resolves you to one entity in its Knowledge Graph only when the record agrees.
  • Structured data. Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema on every page, matching the visible content.
  • Speed and access. A fast page that renders its text in the HTML, with no blocks on Google’s crawlers.
  • Corroboration. Directories, review sites and third-party pages that repeat the same facts. Ties go to the business other sources agree about.

Check whether it names you

Ask. The free AI answer check asks Google’s AI Mode “best [your trade] in [your city]” live, reads the answer for your business, lists who it named instead and which sites it drew on, and checks the map at your own address. One answer on one day is a sample, not a verdict — which is why the full report asks several questions across five engines and records every answer.

Track it

Search Console reports clicks and impressions from AI Overviews inside the ordinary totals rather than as a separate line, so you cannot read the effect off a chart. Two measurements work. First, the answer itself: ask the same questions monthly and record whether you are named and cited. Second, your own traffic: every site we build carries a private dashboard that counts visits referred by AI assistants as their own channel, so the rise shows up next to the calls and forms.

Both are part of the AI SEO program, reported monthly.

FAQ / Answers

How a local business shows up in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode — questions

Do I need special schema for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google’s guidance is that its AI features have no special markup requirement. The structured data that helps Google understand a page — Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList — is the same structured data that helps it everywhere else, and it should match what the page visibly says.

Why does AI Mode name my competitor and not me?

Usually one of three reasons, all findable: the competitor’s Business Profile is more complete or better reviewed for that service; their pages answer the question more directly and specifically; or the web agrees about them — same name, phone and services on every listing — and does not agree about you. The free AI answer check shows which businesses and sources the answer used.

Can I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Not as a separate report. Google includes clicks and impressions from AI Overviews in the ordinary Search Console totals. To see the effect, ask the engines directly and record whether you are named, and count the visits your own analytics attribute to AI assistants.

Is AI Mode replacing the map pack?

Not for a plain trade search, where the pack and the results still appear. AI Mode and AI Overviews take over the question-shaped searches — cost, comparison, how-to-choose — and for local questions they draw on the same Business Profile and review data the pack does, so the work that wins the pack is the foundation for winning the answer.
